Trump settles lawsuit filed by protesters over 2015 scuffle

one of a spate of legal entanglements involving the former president&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Details of the settlement were not divulged&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Although we were eager to proceed to trial to demonstrate the frivolousness of this case&comma; the parties were ultimately able to come to an amicable resolution&comma;” Mr Trump’s lawyer&comma; Alina Habba&comma; said&period; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;We are very pleased with this outcome and are happy to finally put this matter to rest once and for all&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The lawsuit was brought by five New Yorkers of Mexican origin&period; It alleges Mr Trump’s bodyguards attacked them outside his Manhattan skyscraper on September 3&comma; 2015&comma; as they protested against negative comments Mr Trump made about Mexico and Mexican immigrants&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>News reporters recorded the guards ripping signs out of the hands of the protesters&comma; then scuffling with some of them&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Powerful men may put their names on buildings&comma; but the sidewalk will always belong to the people&comma;” the plaintiffs’ lawyer&comma; Benjamin Dictor&comma; said following the settlement announcement&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Defendants were staring down the barrel of a Bronx jury who were about to be presented with overwhelming evidence in support of plaintiffs’ claims&period; Nevertheless&comma; plaintiffs are proud to have settled their claims and to have obtained written recognition by Donald Trump of their right to protest on the public sidewalk&comma;” Mr Dictor said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Trump sat for a deposition a year ago&comma; which would have been played for the jury at the trial&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Trump was a defendant in the lawsuit&comma; along with his company&comma; the Trump Organisation&comma; his presidential campaign and security personnel&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Among other demands&comma; the plaintiffs wanted Mr Trump to pay punitive damages&comma; arguing he should have known the security personnel would act in a &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;negligent or reckless manner&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Trump’s lawyers had resisted having him sit for the deposition&period; While he was in office&comma; they argued there must be &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;exceptional circumstances” to depose a high-ranking government official&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Bronx Judge Doris Gonzalez&comma;
