A day after a student was shot dead at an Ohio fraternity house and 11 people were wounded, the college’s governor, officials and friends are hoping to find some explanation for the violence.

Authorities said two men had left the gathering at Youngstown State University (YSU) after a dispute early on Sunday and then returned and sprayed bullets into the crowd.

Two suspects were arrested on charges of aggravated murder, shooting into a house and 11 counts of felonious assault.

The Mahoning County Jail identified them as 19-year-old Braylon Rogers and 22-year-old Columbus Jones Jr.

YSU senior Jamail Johnson, 25, was fatally wounded as he tried to separate two groups at the Omega Psi Phi fraternity house party, and the 11 injured include a 17-year-old who was critically wounded.

“This is one of those days that every university president across the country, as well as many other officials, always dread,” university president Cynthia Anderson said at a news conference.

Johnson and the others were shot off-campus at a two-storey brick house in a neighbourhood of once-elegant homes, many of which are now boarded up, and the house party had been bustling with 50 or more people, the police chief said.

He was shot once in the head and multiple times in his hips and legs, said Dr Joseph Ohr, a forensic pathologist with the local coroner’s office.

Christopher Cooper, a legal officer for Omega Psi Phi fraternity, said Johnson had recently travelled to North Carolina for a fraternity programme emphasising manhood and scholarship.

He added that Johnson “was just an excellent, excellent young man, and our loss runs deep”.
