Two men have appeared in court charged with the murder of a father of one believed to have been killed for his iPhone.

Michael Sexton, 27, and Richard Smith, 26, faced magistrates in Cheltenham accused of the murder and robbery of Keith Soons.

They appeared separately in the dock and during brief hearings both defendants spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth, addresses and that they understood the charges.

Sexton, of Moors Avenue, and Smith, of Fairview Road, both Cheltenham, are jointly accused of the murder of Mr Soons and the robbery of his wallet, bank card, store card and iPhone 4 between February 4 and 6.

No applications for bail were made and magistrate John Williams, chair of the bench, remanded the pair into custody.

He ordered them to appear at Bristol Crown Court on February 22.

Mr Soons was stabbed in the head with what police believe was a screwdriver-type weapon in Cheltenham during the early hours of February 5.

The 36-year-old, from Gloucester, was found in Wellington Lane by a member of the public at around 8am. He died in hospital later that day.

Preliminary results from a post-mortem examination show that Mr Soons is likely to have died from a penetrative puncture wound to the side of his head.

Detectives believe this may have been caused by a screwdriver-type weapon as the fashion chain worker attempted to get his iPhone 4 back.
