The United Arab Emirates, UAE saw its heaviest rainfall to have ever been recorded in the desert nation since 1949, leading to devastating floods on Tuesday.

The unprecedented heavy rainfall hit Dubai, bringing record rainfall that led to significant disruptions, including flooding homes and roads, and the closure of major shopping centres and Malls. Several people were left stranded from their various journeys whilst many were trapped at home with no escape.

Severe thunderstorms hit Dubai, resulting in over 5.5 inches of rain in just one day, a volume that would normally be seen over an 18 month period. This record breaking rainfall last occurred in 1949 and was described as a “historic weather event” by the state-run WAM news agency.

The heavy rains caused severe disruptions in air travel, with over 1000 flights cancelled or delayed.
Operations at Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs was temporarily suspended on Tuesday and remain severely disrupted after heavy rainfalls battered parts of the Runways.

Dubai airport re-opened on Thursday but remains in disarray after the heavy rainfall led to airlines having to negotiate flooded runways.

Flights of airlines are currently operating out of Terminal 1 but continue to be delayed and disrupted, DXB has urged people to only come to Terminal 1 if they have a confirmed booking. It also asked people to contact their respective airlines for the latest information on their flight status.
