Under-fire Louis van Gaal takes counsel before bizarre press conference

Ed Woodward and David Gill during a difficult few days which ended with him launching an angry monologue against the media&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Van Gaal stunned the assembled press pack at Carrington when he walked out of his weekly press conference after taking just three questions&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>In a five-minute monologue&comma; Van Gaal accused the media of trying to undermine him in his position as United manager&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Dutchman demanded an apology – which he did not get – from the reporters in the media room at the club’s training ground&comma; and then walked out&comma; saying as he walked past a table full of wine and mince pies which had been laid on for the media&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;I wish you a merry Christmas and also maybe a happy new year when I see you&period; Enjoy the wine and a mince pie&period; Goodbye&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Rumours have been circulating all week that Van Gaal could lose his job after taking United on a six-match winless run&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>United are now out of the Champions League and have dropped to fifth in the table&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>And with Jose Mourinho now available and willing to take the United job if the opportunity arises&comma; speculation has been rife that executive vice-chairman Woodward is set to make a change&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>But Van Gaal says he has been called by Woodward&comma; his predecessor David Gill &&num;8211&semi; who is still on the United board – and former manager Ferguson in recent days&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He added&colon; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;You have to stick by the facts and when I get calls off Alex Ferguson and David Gill and Ed Woodward because you are creating something that is not good&comma; what is not being the facts&comma; now I have to answer questions&period; I don’t think I want to do it&period;”<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Van Gaal insists he has felt the ”warmth” of the players and his staff at the club’s training ground this week despite the stories surrounding him&comma;
