<p>A US Army veteran found an old grenade in the garage of his northern New York home, which turned out to be live. </p>
<p>George Stadalski thought the grenade was inert and wanted to donate it to the historical museum at Fort Drum, the Army post located near his home in the village of Evans Mills. </p>
<p>But when Mr Stadalski showed the grenade to a state trooper, the trooper decided to have it checked out by Fort Drum&#8217;s explosives ordnance unit.</p>
<p>The unit removed the grenade from Mr Stadalski&#8217;s house on Wednesday afternoon after police evacuated nearby homes and a school.</p>
<p>Police have said the grenade was live when it was detonated by the Army unit at another site, and that it was of a vintage used in both world wars.</p>
<p>Mr Stadalski has told a local newspaper that he found the grenade resting on a beam in his garage.</p>
