WhatsApp and Facebook have decided that they will end support for BlackBerry 10 OS by the end of the year.

Senior manager in charge of BlackBerry’s App Ecosystem and Developer Outreach team, Lou Gazzola, made the announcement in a blog post. He added that fans can let WhatsApp and Facebook know how disappointed they are by posting on social media with the tag #IloveBB10Apps.

“We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands,” he wrote on the blog. “Our commitment to BlackBerry 10 and to developers has not changed – we know our developer community continues to be one of the strongest proponents of BlackBerry 10 and they are creating thousands of apps every month.”

BlackBerry is to support the apps coming to its platform. It will highlight native applications on BlackBerry World in a list called ‘Great Apps on BlackBerry’.

It’s somewhat understandable that Facebook would refocus its efforts elsewhere. It says that 99.5% of smartphone sales today are covered by mobile phone operating systems from Apple, Google and Microsoft.
