<p>A 96-year-old woman who stood up to a burglar in her home has been praised for her bravery by police.</p>
<p>The elderly woman was woken at 1am on January 21 by the sound of someone searching her home in Harrow Road East, Dorking, where she has lived since 1937.</p>
<p>A Surrey Police spokeswoman said: &#8220;Unruffled, the lady told the suspect to &#8216;get out&#8217; and the man left the property empty-handed.&#8221;</p>
<p>The suspect is described as a white man, in his early 20s, 5ft 6ins, of medium build, with a chubby face and short black or dark brown hair. He was wearing a black jacket and a lighter top underneath.</p>
<p>Detective Constable Audrey Cumiskey said: &#8220;The lady has lived in her home since 1937 and she is determined to remain there.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is the third time she has been burgled but with your help we can identify those wicked enough to target a 96-year-old lady and ensure they are brought to justice.</p>
<p>&#8220;Scenes-of-crime officers attended the property and we are following a number of lines of enquiry. However, your assistance could make all the difference to this investigation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mole Valley neighbourhood inspector Terri Poulton added: &#8220;Officers from the local Safer Neighbourhood Team have previously visited the lady advising on security measures and how to stay safe.</p>
<p>&#8220;We will be looking at what extra measures can be put in place but I appeal to anyone who can help us catch those behind these burglaries to come forward.</p>
<p>&#8220;This offence will shock most people, especially given the victim&#8217;s age, but by working together we can protect this lady and the wider community by removing those responsible from the streets.&#8221;</p>
