<p>Holy smoke &#8211; the famous first appearance of Batman is expected to fetch thousands of pounds at auction.</p>
<p>The largest private collection of vintage American comics ever to be sold in the UK is going under the hammer.</p>
<p>The restored 1939 edition of Detective Comics shows the caped crusader battling criminals on the streets of Gotham City for the first time and could fetch £25,000.</p>
<p>There are thought to be only 150 copies of this edition left in the world.</p>
<p>An unrestored edition was sold earlier this year for more than 1 million dollars (£636,000) at Heritage Auctions in Texas.</p>
<p>The sale at Dominic Winter auctioneers, in association with Comic Book Auctions, in South Cerney, Gloucestershire, will see 198 comics up for grabs.</p>
<p>Auctioneer Dominic Winter said: &#8220;We are thrilled to see this vast and unique collection of vintage American comics being auctioned.&#8221;</p>
<p>Batman&#8217;s lack of remorse for his victims was such an instant hit with comic fans that he received his own solo title in 1940.</p>
<p>A well-restored edition of this title, featuring the Dark Knight with his trusted partner Robin, is also up for auction with an estimated price of £12,000 to £15,000.</p>
<p>The private collection, from a British fan, includes rare edition copies of a number of favourite superheroes.</p>
