<p>Colin Firth has already scooped a string of awards for his portrayal of the stammering George VI in The King&#8217;s Speech, but it&#8217;s now been revealed that he was not the screenwriter&#8217;s first choice for the role.</p>
<p>Hugh Grant was initially offered the part by director Tom Hooper, but reportedly turned it down, and now screenwriter David Seidler has revealed to the Daily Telegraph that he wanted A Beautiful Mind actor Paul Bettany to play the king.</p>
<p>David said: &#8220;When I initially wrote the screenplay, I immediately had Geoffrey Rush in mind for [speech therapist] Lionel Logue, but I thought Paul Bettany would be the actor to play the king.</p>
<p>But he added: &#8220;I was lucky that it was decided the role would go to Colin. As soon as he read for it, I knew he was perfect.&#8221;</p>
<p>Colin has already won a best actor Golden Globe for the part and is tipped to scoop an Oscar for his on-screen performance as well.</p>
