A British volunteer died after she plunged four floors from a hotel window in Nepal, the Foreign Office has said.

Jennifer Smith was working on a school building project in the Himalayan country when she plummeted to her death in the city of Kathmandu.

The 22-year-old, from Stretford, Greater Manchester, had been enjoying a weekend off with a group from the volunteer programme Platform2 at the time.

She had been due to return home for Christmas.

A spokesman for Platform2 described her death on Saturday as a “tragic accident”.

“The volunteer fell from a hotel window resulting in fatal injuries,” the spokesman said. “The accident occurred while away from the Platform2 project on a weekend off. The next of kin have been informed, and we would like to offer the family our deepest sympathy.”

Ms Smith had been based in the village of Lamatar, about eight miles from the capital city, for the 10-week programme. She was expected to fly home on December 23.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national on December 4 in Kathmandu, Nepal. “Next of kin have been informed and we are providing consular assistance.”

Ms Smith had been on an evening out before the accident happened at around 11.30pm, sources said.

Local reports suggested she suffered head and spinal injuries in the fall at the Tibet Holiday Hotel, in Thamel, a district popular among low-budget travellers. She was taken to the Norvic Hospital but was pronounced dead.
