<p>David Cameron is back in Britain to take control of the Libyan crisis, as the Government&#8217;s delayed rescue efforts entered their final phase.</p>
<p>The Prime Minister, who cut short his trip to the Gulf, is due to chair back-to-back meetings of the National Security Council and the Cobra emergencies committee in an attempt to reassert control after days of criticism over Whitehall&#8217;s response.</p>
<p>On Thursday night, he spoke to US president Barack Obama to discuss &#8220;possible multilateral measures&#8221; against the strife-torn North African state.</p>
<p>The pair also agreed to work together closely on the continuing evacuation of foreign nationals, many of whom are international oil workers stranded in camps in the Libyan desert.</p>
<p>Mr Cameron has apologised for Britain&#8217;s response to the crisis, saying he was &#8220;extremely sorry&#8221; for the delayed rescue operation and vowing that lessons would be learned.</p>
<p>Around 220 Britons are still believed to be stranded in the Libya as Colonel Muammar Gaddafi clings desperately to power. According to the Foreign Office, 50 remain in Tripoli and around 170 are in the remote oil-producing areas of the desert desert</p>
<p>The FCO said that it helped more than 350 British nationals leave Libya on Thursday, with more aircraft being sent on Friday &#8220;as necessary&#8221;.</p>
<p>British officials were on Thursday night working with Nato allies, in what Defence Secretary Liam Fox described as an &#8220;international co-ordinated effort&#8221; to bring home the remaining foreigners stranded in remote camps.</p>
<p>Dr Fox &#8211; who discussed the situation with Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen &#8211; said the main focus of concern was increasingly the oil workers.</p>
<p>It was reported that an SAS contingent has been placed on stand-by to assist with the efforts, although the Ministry of Defence refused to comment on the matter.</p>
