as the Government&&num;8217&semi;s delayed rescue efforts entered their final phase&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Prime Minister&comma; who cut short his trip to the Gulf&comma; is due to chair back-to-back meetings of the National Security Council and the Cobra emergencies committee in an attempt to reassert control after days of criticism over Whitehall&&num;8217&semi;s response&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>On Thursday night&comma; he spoke to US president Barack Obama to discuss &&num;8220&semi;possible multilateral measures&&num;8221&semi; against the strife-torn North African state&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The pair also agreed to work together closely on the continuing evacuation of foreign nationals&comma; many of whom are international oil workers stranded in camps in the Libyan desert&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Mr Cameron has apologised for Britain&&num;8217&semi;s response to the crisis&comma; saying he was &&num;8220&semi;extremely sorry&&num;8221&semi; for the delayed rescue operation and vowing that lessons would be learned&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Around 220 Britons are still believed to be stranded in the Libya as Colonel Muammar Gaddafi clings desperately to power&period; According to the Foreign Office&comma; 50 remain in Tripoli and around 170 are in the remote oil-producing areas of the desert desert<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The FCO said that it helped more than 350 British nationals leave Libya on Thursday&comma; with more aircraft being sent on Friday &&num;8220&semi;as necessary&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>British officials were on Thursday night working with Nato allies&comma; in what Defence Secretary Liam Fox described as an &&num;8220&semi;international co-ordinated effort&&num;8221&semi; to bring home the remaining foreigners stranded in remote camps&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Dr Fox &&num;8211&semi; who discussed the situation with Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen &&num;8211&semi;
