A guitar, a baby car seat and a roll of carpet are among the unusual items that have been left behind at hotels, according to new research.

Mobile phone chargers and underwear topped the list of the most commonly forgotten belongings but a survey of lost property also found a number of wigs, keys to a sports car and walking sticks have all been found after guests checked out.

Novotel Hotels said false teeth and hearing aids were also found in rooms at its 31 outlets along with adult toys, odd shoes and electric toothbrushes.

Hotel towels topped the list of the most popular items to be taken from rooms, with guests also keeping cushions, bathrobes, lightbulbs and remote controls.

The top 10 also included coffee sachets, coat hangers and plastic tissue boxes.

The hotel franchise has even opened its own online shop so customers can buy everything in the rooms they stay in.

Melissa Micallef, marketing manager for Novotel Hotels, said: “We continue to be mystified by the random collection of items left in our rooms by guests at our hotels. Our lost property departments really are treasure troves.

“It is also surprising to see what guests take with them when they check out. Our cushions and towels seem to be particularly popular.

“In response to the clear demand for the special touches that make our rooms a home away from home, we’re now offering guests the opportunity to purchase all manner of items, from the bed itself to the art on the walls, at Novotel’s new online boutique novotelstore.com.”
