<p>Four young children have died in a house fire, police said.</p>
<p>Emergency services were called to a house in Hulland Ward, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire, at 11.30pm on Monday.</p>
<p>Derbyshire Police said that when the blaze at the house in Highfield Road was extinguished, four children were found to have died.</p>
<p>A spokesman said: &#8220;Four young children, two girls and two boys, have died.&#8221;</p>
<p>He said there was also &#8220;significant damage&#8221; to the house.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is currently a joint investigation ongoing between Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Fire Service to establish the cause of the fire, which at this time is still unknown.&#8221;</p>
<p>Derbyshire Fire and Rescue service said it was called to the &#8220;severe house fire&#8221; at a semi-detached house in Highfield Road at around 11.30pm.</p>
<p>A spokeswoman said four fire engines attended the scene, adding: &#8220;The fire was well developed on arrival.&#8221;</p>
<p>A Derbyshire Police spokesman said the boys who died were aged nine and four, and the girls were six and two.</p>
<p>He said: &#8220;A 45-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. At this stage there is no obvious sign of what caused the fire and a joint investigation between Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service will get under way later this morning.&#8221;</p>
