Four people have been killed by Libyan government forces during protests against leader Muammar Gaddafi, an opposition website has said.

The deaths in the city of Beyida came as activists using Facebook and Twitter called for nationwide anti-government demonstrations.

So far, protests have been reported in Beyida and to the west in Libya’s second-largest city, Benghazi.

Opposition website Libya Al-Youm said the protesters were killed by snipers from the Internal Security Forces. It is not clear when they were killed.

The Libyan government maintains tight control over the media and the reports could not be independently confirmed.

The opposition is hoping to tap into unrest in the region that has ousted leaders in Tunisia and Egypt.
