<p>Tunisian authorities have temporarily banned vehicle and pedestrian traffic on the capital&#8217;s central boulevard after a new outbreak of clashes between police and stone-throwing protesters.</p>
<p>Police and troops backed by tanks deployed in Tunis as hundreds of youths rallied to protest against the North African country&#8217;s interim government &#8211; fearing it has hijacked Tunisia&#8217;s revolution.</p>
<p>The ban on traffic in Bourguiba Avenue is the first of its kind since President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled Tunisia on January 14 in a popular uprising which has sent shockwaves through the Arab world.</p>
<p>Police fired tear gas and warning shots as violence erupted alongside a sit-in which drew tens of thousands of protesters near the seat of the interim government.</p>
