Ricky Gervais has admitted that he thought he was losing his mind after his Golden Globes jokes provoked such a furore.

The funnyman, 49, who sparked controversy by delivering a string of near-the-knuckle jibes at the expense of shocked Hollywood A-listers in the audience, said the reaction led him to question whether he had gone too far.

But he wrote on his blog: “Thanks to the twitterverse, the blogosphere, all the journos and the coolest stars for coming to my rescue.

“It was heart-warming to realise I wasn’t losing my mind. Some reactions nearly had me believing I’d gone too far too. Nearly.

“Can’t wait for the people who thought it was over the top to see my stand-up shows. F*** me, they will s*** themselves.”

Ricky posted a link to a video of the likes of actor Christian Bale, who called the comedian “fantastic” and “a genius” on the night, and Al Pacino, who said: “He’s a comic, so he’s going to go for it… if he censors himself he’s going to curtail his wit… it’s funny”, defending the star.

The defiant comic has previously defended his performance, saying: “I enjoyed the Globes more this year. I think I had better gags. More along the lines of the Mel Gibson one last year (when Ricky made a jibe about the film star’s drinking).”

He has dismissed speculation that he was told off by organisers when he disappeared during the ceremony, saying: “Obviously the rumour that the organisers stopped me going out on stage for an hour is rubbish.”
