<p>Diane Lane is set to play Martha Kent in the Superman movie.</p>
<p>The US actress, 46, will star as Superman&#8217;s adoptive mother opposite British actor Henry Cavill, 27, who has previously been announced as the Man Of Steel.</p>
<p>Director Zack Snyder said: &#8220;This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.&#8221;</p>
<p>Plot details of the Warner Bros film, which is expected to hit cinemas in December 2012, remain under wraps.</p>
<p>Martha Kent and her husband Jonathan famously adopt the young Clark after he comes from the planet Krypton to earth in a rocket.</p>
<p>Diane&#8217;s credits include Unfaithful, The Perfect Storm, and most recently Secretariat, opposite John Malkovich.</p>
