<p>Jennifer Lawrence is vying with Hailee Steinfeld for the lead role in Hunger Games, according to reports.</p>
<p>Both Oscar nominees are reported to be in the running for the part of Katniss in the big-screen adaptation of the teenage dystopian novel, to be directed by Gary Ross.</p>
<p>According to Variety, which also adds Abigail Breslin to the list, Winter&#8217;s Bone star Jennifer is the frontrunner ahead of True Grit actress Hailee.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve met with Gary Ross and it&#8217;s definitely something that we&#8217;re taking one day at a time and making sure everything is in place and everything is ready,&#8221; Hailee has been quoted as telling MTV.</p>
<p>Gary has previously stated that what makes the character of Katniss attractive is her strength, assuredness, defiance &#8220;and ultimately her compassion&#8221;, and that the film &#8211; based on the first of three books by Suzanne Collins &#8211; wouldn&#8217;t exclude its teenage audience.</p>
<p>Hunger Games is expected to be released in 2012.</p>
