Libya: UK seeks world condemnation

described by Prime Minister David Cameron as &&num;8220&semi;unacceptable&comma; counter-productive and wrong&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Estimates of deaths after several days of clashes topped 200 on Sunday after forces loyal to Gaddafi opened fire on mourners at a funeral for protesters killed earlier in the week&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Reports suggested Libya&&num;8217&semi;s second city Benghazi may be slipping out of Gaddafi&&num;8217&semi;s control&comma; with some military units apparently siding with protesters against the foreign mercenaries hired to bolster the crackdown on protests&period; There have also been demonstrations in the outskirts of capital Tripoli&comma; a stronghold of the dictator&&num;8217&semi;s supporters&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Libyan leader&&num;8217&semi;s son Saif Gaddafi appeared on state television on Sunday night to declare that his father remained in charge with the army&&num;8217&semi;s backing&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;Muammar Gaddafi&comma; our leader&comma; is leading the battle in Tripoli&comma; and we are with him&period; The armed forces are with him&period; Tens of thousands are heading here to be with him&period; We will fight until the last man&comma; the last woman&comma; the last bullet&comma;&&num;8221&semi; he said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The younger Gaddafi added that the death toll was 84&comma; although doctors in Benghazi say more than 200 have died&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Foreign Secretary William Hague will seek a united expression of condemnation for the Libyan authorities&&num;8217&semi; response to the demonstrations when he meets fellow EU foreign ministers in Brussels later&period; Mr Hague has also called on Arab leaders to express their concern about the most brutal response so far to the wave of pro-democracy protest spreading across north Africa and the Middle East&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>On Sunday Mr Hague spoke by telephone to Saif Gaddafi&comma; warning him of global disapproval of the regime&&num;8217&semi;s actions&period; The use of sniper fire&comma; automatic weapons and heavy artillery against unarmed protesters is &&num;8220&semi;dreadful and horrifying&&num;8221&semi;&comma; Mr Hague has said&period; &&num;8220&semi;The Foreign Secretary made clear the UK&&num;8217&semi;s grave concern at the escalation in violence&period; He expressed alarm at reports of large numbers of people being killed or attacked by Libyan security forces&comma;&&num;8221&semi; said a Foreign Office spokesman&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>On Sunday night the Foreign Office tightened its travel advice for Libya&comma; urging any Britons without a pressing need to remain in the country to leave by commercial means if it is safe to do so&period; <&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Consular staff have been helping some of the estimated 50 UK nationals in eastern Libya&comma; where the unrest has been focused&comma; to move to safer areas over the past few days&period;
