<p>Ed Miliband insisted his party was not solely to blame for the country&#8217;s current debt burden following Labour&#8217;s time in government.</p>
<p>In a staunch defence of his party&#8217;s economic stance, the Labour leader instead attacked the Tories for continually citing that the previous government was the prime cause of the overspend.</p>
<p>Writing in the Times he explained: &#8220;It is not true we opposed every cut.</p>
<p>&#8220;Labour is clear that spending is not the answer to every problem.</p>
<p>&#8220;But neither is it true that Labour is to blame for the deficit or that the deficit reduction programme being pursued by this Conservative-led government is necessary and fair.&#8221;</p>
<p>His comments come following the VAT rise which Mr Miliband has criticised for penalising the poor.</p>
<p>He told the paper: &#8220;Some people might shrug and say low growth and squeezed family budgets are a price worth paying.&#8221;</p>
<p>Defending the previous Labour government&#8217;s economic record Mr Miliband explained: &#8220;They want to say that Britain&#8217;s economic difficulties were caused by chronic overspending and, therefore, the right response now is simply to cut the deficit as far and as fast as possible.&#8221;</p>
