<p>A government minister has been shot dead by his personal driver in Southern Sudan, an army official said. </p>
<p>Colonel Philip Aguer said that the driver then killed himself.</p>
<p>The cause of the shooting was not immediately clear but appeared unrelated to Southern Sudan&#8217;s successful independence referendum from the north.</p>
<p>Aguer said the minister and his driver were believed to be related by marriage. </p>
<p>He declined to name the minister, pending notification of relatives.</p>
<p>The final results of Southern Sudan&#8217;s independence referendum, held last month, were announced on Monday. </p>
<p>Nearly 99% of southerners voted for secession. </p>
<p>The oil-rich south is expected to become the world&#8217;s newest nation on 9 July. </p>
