<p>Carey Mulligan has revealed she went for a hat-trick of auditions for the role of Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.</p>
<p>The Oscar-nominated actress, who had been tipped to star as the troubled computer hacker, tried out for the coveted part in David Fincher&#8217;s highly anticipated American adaptation of Stieg Larsson&#8217;s best-selling Millennium novel three times, but lost out to Rooney Mara.</p>
<p>&#8220;I auditioned for it three times &#8211; I dyed my hair black, got fake nose rings and covered my face in black make-up, so yeah, I would have loved that part,&#8221; she told Radio Times.</p>
<p>Despite being bombarded with work offers since her award-winning performance in An Education, Carey, who next stars in Never Let Me Go alongside Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield, likes to pick her jobs wisely.</p>
<p>&#8220;I haven&#8217;t worked for nearly a year. Not intentionally, but because I couldn&#8217;t find anything,&#8221; she continued. </p>
<p>&#8220;I was trying to find something where I&#8217;d be freaked out and a bit nervous about doing it. I want that challenge.&#8221;</p>
<p>The 25-year-old had initially spoken of wanting the part.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am obsessed with those books. I would love to do them. I am not going to lie about that. I would love to play Lisbeth Salander,&#8221; she previously said.</p>
