Hawaii politicians have thrown out a proposal to sell copies of US president Barack Obama’s birth records for 100 dollars (£62).

The bid failed to receive a hearing before a deadline for bills to advance to their final committees.

Hawaii house health committee chairman Ryan Yamane said he would not consider the legislation because he did not think it was appropriate to sell private information to the public, even if it was the president’s birth documentation.

State privacy laws bar the release of birth records unless the requester is someone with a tangible interest, such as a close family member.

So-called “birthers” claim there’s no proof Mr Obama was born in the US and he is therefore ineligible to be president.
