<p>A Malaysian court has sentenced a doctor and his assistant to one year in jail for selling a newborn boy.</p>
<p>Prosecutor Dzul Iswari Mohamad Jaafar said a court in southern Johor state found Robert Luk and his assistant Suleiman Salim guilty of selling the baby to a couple for 10,000 ringgit (£2,060) in 2005.</p>
<p>The two men were accused of altering the birth certificate of the boy, born to a poor woman who wanted to give him up for adoption.</p>
<p>The offence &#8211; unlawful transfer of control of a child &#8211; carries a maximum penalty of five years in jail.</p>
<p>Dzul Iswari said today that it was the first such successful prosecution.</p>
<p>Several people have been arrested in recent years over sales of babies to childless couples.</p>
