Musician-turned-chef Levi Roots is to spice up the airwaves – by becoming a Radio 2 DJ.

Roots, who found fame on Dragons’ Den when investors backed his Reggae Reggae Sauce, will host his first show on New Year’s Day.

The two-hour special will be dedicated entirely to Lover’s Rock, a gentle romantic form of reggae and will include live sessions from Janet Kay and Carroll Thompson, as well as an interview with Denis Bovell.

Roots said: “I can’t wait to share my passion for reggae music with Radio 2’s listeners.”

His show is among a number of special programmes lined up for Christmas. Also included is a programme assembled from archive recordings of late DJ Kenny Everett.

Kenny Everett’s Christmas Selection Box will feature characters such as Captain Kremmen and the jingles which made him one of the most famous broadcasters of his time. Paul Gambaccini will also present a documentary about the career of the presenter, who died from an Aids-related illness in 1995.

Kirsty MacColl’s career will be celebrated a decade after her death with a programme presented by Billy Bragg, with contributions from David Byrne, Johnny Marr and Holly Johnson.

Former BBC chairman Michael Grade – who is to be elevated to the House Of Lords – will also present a programme looking at the history of the well-known theatrical venue, the London Palladium.

Mr Grade’s family helped to give the theatre a fresh lease of fame in the 1950s when they began to broadcast regular Sunday night shows from it for ITV.
