Regions braced for snow and rain

with up to 4ins &lpar;10cm&rpar; over higher ground&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Drivers across Scotland and Northern Ireland were warned to expect icy road conditions following overnight rain&comma; sleet and snow&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Met Office issued severe weather warnings of heavy snow for several regions&comma; including the Highlands&comma; Grampian&comma; Strathclyde&comma; Central&comma; Tayside and Fife&comma; plus south west Scotland&comma; Lothian and Borders&period; Wet weather was expected to spread to parts of Wales and England&comma; with windy conditions in the south&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Billy Payne&comma; of MeteoGroup&comma; the weather division of the Press Association&comma; said on Friday&colon; &&num;8220&semi;Across northern England&comma; the snow will turn to rain&comma; but there will still be some snow showers over parts of Scotland&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;The snow will continue to push northwards overnight giving 2-5cm of snow over southern Scotland&comma; with 10cm over the higher ground&period; To the south over England&comma; there will be mostly rain and showers overnight with some quite heavy downpours&period; It will also be quite windy in the south east&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>She added&colon; &&num;8220&semi;Tomorrow the snow is still going to be around over south and east Scotland&comma; gradually pulling away over the day to become brighter&comma; but remaining in some parts&period; We could see some wintry showers over west and north England&comma; with rain&comma; sleet and snow mostly in Northern Ireland&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Sub zero temperatures of between -5 to -10C were expected to remain across Scotland overnight&comma; rising to between 1 &&num;8211&semi; 4C on Saturday&comma; with milder temperatures of around 9C in southern England&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Earlier on Friday a band of wintry showers of snow and sleet spread north and east from Wales and the Midlands to northern England before hitting southern Scotland causing disruption on the roads&period; Southern England experienced heavy rain&comma; with the South West and West Country bearing the brunt&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The AA reported a busy day for breakdowns due to adverse weather conditions&comma; with calls up 70&percnt; as drivers became stuck in the snow&period; The organisation said it had attended around 12&comma;000 call outs by 4pm&comma; above its normal 9&comma;500 Friday rate and ahead of the evening rush hour&comma; with 16&comma;500 expected by the end of the day&period; Its &&num;8216&semi;snow-busting&&num;8217&semi; Land Rovers worked alongside the regular patrol force to rescue 89 cars stuck in snow&comma; with the busiest areas reported in Leeds&comma;
