David Hasselhoff’s views have been given an academic airing at the Oxford Union – with The Hoff waxing lyrical about topics ranging from politics and personal philosophy to reality TV and talking cars.

The US actor, singer and all-round entertainer was given the floor to talk about truth and consequences – a topic that allowed him to opine – and occasionally sing – on any number of subjects.

Those present learned that Prime Minister David Cameron admits to being a huge fan of Knight Rider and that, according to The Hoff at least, reality shows have ruined TV. The revelation may come as a surprise to fans of the 58-year-old and his TV work, which has included reality TV shows Dancing With The Stars and The Hasselhoffs, in which he starred alongside his two daughters.

Dressed in a shiny grey suit and tie and carrying a Baywatch-style life preserver, Hasselhoff took to the platform to ringing applause and a standing ovation.

During a 10-minute introduction, David explained that he had just come up from Westminster, where he bumped into Mr Cameron.

“I go to Parliament and I’m having a great time. I say, ‘I’d really like to meet the Prime Minister’, and as I turned around there is the Prime Minister. He said, ‘I’m a big fan of Knight Rider’. I said, ‘I’m a big fan of you – are you Tony Blair?’,” The Hoff joked to the audience.

The judge of Britain’s Got Talent said his experiences filming the show led him to believe that Britain was every bit as “nuts” as America. But he had some harsh words to say about the direction that reality shows had taken television. “Reality television has ruined television,” he said, adding: “It is exploitation of youth.”
