The Medical Board of California has denied a provisional decision which would have allowed the fertility doctor who helped a woman give birth to octuplets to keep his licence.

Instead, the state’s medical licence agency will decide at a meeting in May whether Dr Michael Kamrava will keep his licence or face other censure for allegedly providing substandard care to Nadya Suleman and two other patients.

In an earlier proposed decision, Judge Daniel Juarez recommended the board revoke Dr Kamrava’s licence but stay the action and place him on probation for five years after overseeing his licence hearing in Los Angeles late last year.

Dr Kamrava has faced scrutiny from the state and public condemnation since it was revealed that he was the doctor whose fertility treatments resulted in all 14 of Ms Suleman’s children.

The Beverly Hills fertility doctor testified to implanting Ms Suleman with 12 embryos – six times the normal number for a woman her age – before the pregnancy that resulted in octuplets.

Ms Suleman has been dubbed ‘octomom’ in the American press.

He testified that she agreed to foetal reduction if too many of the embryos became viable, but never returned for follow-up care.

The next board meeting is scheduled to be held in Los Angeles on May 5 and 6.
