Waitrose has invested more than £10 million in its home delivery website as it looks to rapidly expand its online sales business during the coming decade.

The supermarket group has redesigned the site to make it quicker and easier for consumers to order groceries, as well as to use other services, such as click and collect, Waitrose Entertaining, wine, flowers and gift ordering.

The revamp of the Waitrose Deliver site, which is being rebranded Waitrose.com, comes as the group prepares to roll out its delivery service into London.

Until last year, it had been prevented from delivering food to homes within the M25 as part of its supply agreement with Ocado. But a new 10-year deal agreed in May will open up the market to the group from this summer.

Mark Price, Waitrose managing director, said: “This investment in our online platform will dramatically enhance the customer experience so that shoppers receive the unrivalled standards of service and the personal touch they associate with our branches.”

These ‘personal touches’ will include online shoppers being able to make requests, such as being able to purchase a specific number of items, rather than having to buy the standard pack size, to cut down on cost and waste.

They will also be able to specify that they would like green bananas or extra thick slices of ham from the delicatessen counter.

As well as being able to buy popular staples, customers will also be able to use the new site to navigate their way around the cheese, fish, meat and delicatessen counters.

The group is also expanding the number of delivery slots available at times when demand is high, such as on Fridays and at weekends, while drivers will carry the shopping right into people’s kitchens if they want.

The website will be launched in the second week of March.
