Warning over 'local' produce labels

on sale in England and Wales are making the claim falsely&comma; a study has revealed&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;Welsh lamb&&num;8221&semi; from New Zealand&comma; &&num;8220&semi;Somerset butter&&num;8221&semi; from Scotland&comma; &&num;8220&semi;Devon ham&&num;8221&semi; from Denmark and &&num;8220&semi;West Country fish fillets&&num;8221&semi; &&num;8211&semi; where fish is caught in the West Country but filleted in China &&num;8211&semi; are some examples of items found to be misleading consumers&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The survey also found cases where ice cream being marketed as &&num;8220&semi;local&&num;8221&semi; was actually a well-known brand&comma; &&num;8220&semi;fresh local cream&&num;8221&semi; was a really cream substitute containing vegetable fat and &&num;8220&semi;Yorkshire chillies&&num;8221&semi; in chilli sausage were supermarket-bought&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The Local Government Regulation &lpar;LGR&rpar; &&num;8211&semi; which oversees council regulation &&num;8211&semi; carried out the inspections&comma; testing 558 products labelled as &&num;8220&semi;local&&num;8221&semi; in 300 shops&comma; restaurants&comma; markets and manufacturers&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Of these&comma; 18&percnt; of &&num;8220&semi;local&&num;8221&semi; claims were&comma; according to the LGR&comma; &&num;8220&semi;undoubtedly false&&num;8221&semi;&comma; with a further 14&percnt; unverifiable and therefore assumed to be false&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>At 19&percnt;&comma; restaurants had the highest incidence of false claims while manufacturers had the fewest with 11&percnt;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>LGR chairman Cllr Paul Bettison called the results &&num;8220&semi;extremely worrying&&num;8221&semi;&comma; adding&colon; &&num;8220&semi;Councils are working with businesses to make sure consumers have the information they need and that they are not being ripped off&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;Many people want to support local businesses or choose food that has not travelled from the other side of the world&comma; so it is vital that they have accurate information to help them make their choices&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>While there is currently no legal definition of the term &&num;8220&semi;local&&num;8221&semi; in food labelling legislation&comma; the Food Law Code of Practice states that it should mean &&num;8220&semi;sales within the supplying establishment&&num;8217&semi;s own county plus the greater of either the neighbouring county or counties or 30 miles&sol;50 kilometres from the boundary of the supplying establishment&&num;8217&semi;s county&&num;8221&semi;&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;<div style&equals;"padding-bottom&colon;15px&semi;" class&equals;"wordads-tag" data-slot-type&equals;"belowpost">&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;<div id&equals;"atatags-dynamic-belowpost-69e4b8e38d537">&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;<script type&equals;"text&sol;javascript">&NewLine;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;&Tab;window&period;getAdSnippetCallback &equals;
