Peter Weir is not as keen as Russell Crowe on the idea of making a sequel to Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World.

The Oscar-winning Australian actor starred as explorer Captain Jack Aubrey in Weir’s 2003 award-winning epic, and Russell has reportedly been keen to make a sequel for some time, encouraging his fans on Twitter in December to lobby Fox bosses to make the movie.

But director Peter said: “I think I had commanded the ship for that movie and it was enough for me and it was a fascinating voyage – I tend to do things once you know, I like to move onto something else.”

The film was based on several novels in the series by Patrick O’Brian featuring Captain Jack Aubrey, so there is material there for Russell to revive the character with another director on board.

Peter has just returned with his first film since Master And Commander.

The Way Back is another epic about soldiers who escaped from a Siberian gulag in 1940 starring Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan, Jim Sturgess and Ed Harris.

Peter revealed he was so inspired by the soldier’s story he wanted to tell it in film.

He said: “I think it was the survival aspect and intense admiration for these ordinary people taking this 4,000 mile walk.

“And you think things like could I have done it would I have escaped and taken that risk?

“So from a man who had grown up with stories of WWII escapes and stories of explorers, it drew on ancient feelings of excitement about adventure and challenge.”
