<p>Southern Sudan&#8217;s referendum commission says that more than 99% of voters in the south opted for secession according to the first official primary results released since the vote was held earlier this month.</p>
<p>The head of the commission&#8217;s southern bureau, Justice Chan Reec Madut, said Sunday in the region&#8217;s capital of Juba that voter turnout in the 10 states in the south was also 99%. He says more than 60% of eligible voters turned out in the country&#8217;s north, 58% of whom voted for secession.</p>
<p>The chairman of the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, Mohamed Ibrahim Khalil, said 99% of Sudanese voters in eight nations also voted for secession.</p>
<p>Final results from the referendum were scheduled to be announced in February.</p>
