<p>Annette Bening hopes The Kids Are All Right has encouraged people to become more open-minded about same-sex relationships.</p>
<p>The star, up for a best actress Oscar for her performance as a lesbian mother in the film, said the movie stood for the dignity of all families.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think when something is a good movie, first of all, well made, funny, maybe has some heart, that comes first. If you can open people&#8217;s hearts then maybe people&#8217;s minds get opened after that,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m proud that the movie does stand up for the dignity of all families, especially for the kids. Those children deserve the same self-respect and dignity as kids from straight parents. </p>
<p>&#8220;I hope that does open a few hearts and minds, certainly people that have talked to me about the movie, there&#8217;s a special grasp I get on my arm from certain people because of what it says about family. Our country, we&#8217;ve got a big tent, let everybody in, I hope people take that away from the movie.&#8221;</p>
<p>Annette, who is married to veteran actor Warren Beatty, revealed she loved the script as soon as she read it.</p>
<p>&#8220;I felt a real connection to the story, I thought it was beautifully constructed in a classic form, and I just had a very intuitive response to the character which is the best you can hope for as an actor,&#8221; she added.</p>
<p>&#8220;Anything intuitive is much richer. I just stuck with that. I&#8217;ve been doing this for a few years now, I&#8217;ve learned a few things and maybe one of them I hope I&#8217;ve learned is if you have that gut level response don&#8217;t worry about it, just go with it.&#8221;</p>
