<p>Britons arriving in Malta on HMS Cumberland have spoken of their joy at leaving crisis-torn Libya.</p>
<p>A Falklands veteran who was working on a clean water project was among the 207 people delivered to the Mediterranean island by the Royal Navy.</p>
<p>Mike Wilson, 61, a former sailor from Stamshaw in Portsmouth, made his way from Brega in the south of the country to meet the British warship in Benghazi.</p>
<p>He said: &#8220;I can&#8217;t speak highly enough of how we were treated and cared for in getting out of Libya.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was a very dangerous situation which was escalating and all of us on board were glad to be rescued.&#8221;</p>
<p>He was working on the Great Man Made River project in Brega.</p>
<p>Dozens of British workers have been involved in building a pipeline from a giant underground water source to the rest of the country.</p>
<p>He said: &#8220;It&#8217;s a really important programme for the people and it&#8217;s a real shame that we have had to come out.</p>
<p>&#8220;But we were getting reports about looting and militias and it was best to get out of there.&#8221;</p>
<p>He travelled north by car past fighting factions, and spent more than 30 hours in HMS Cumberland as she crossed rough seas to Malta.</p>
