Former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt has confirmed he will attend a magistrates’ court hearing in London next month to face criminal charges relating to alleged spot-fixing.

Butt, who along with team-mates Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif was recently banned by the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption tribunal, also revealed that he has launched an appeal against the suspension with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The trio deny any wrongdoing and reports emerged that Butt – who was banned for 10 years, with five of those suspended – and team-mate Amir had appealed to the Switzerland-based body.

In a statement released through his lawyer Yasin Patel, Butt said: “This is to confirm that today my legal team served a statement of appeal upon The Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) to appeal against the Tribunal’s findings in relation to the Lord’s Test and the sanctions imposed at the recent hearing in Doha.

“Full grounds for the appeal will be lodged in due course.

“Due to the pending proceedings in the UK, my barrister, Yasin Patel has advised me against saying anything further at this stage in relation to the appeal.”

The players face charges of conspiring to cheat bookmakers and conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court on March 17.

“I can also confirm that it is my intention to attend the hearing at the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court on March 17,” Butt added. “At this stage I have no further comments to make in relation to that matter.”

Amir was banned for five years and Asif for seven, two of which were suspended.

The trio were accused of spot-fixing in relation to the deliberate bowling of no balls at specific moments in the August 2010 Lord’s Test against England.
