Centre-right party Fine Gael is on course for a resounding victory in the Irish general election.

But an exit poll and early tallies suggested leader Enda Kenny will fall short of leading a single-party government.

Fine Gael secured about 36.1% support – its highest result since November 1982 – according to the Millward Brown Lansdowne study commissioned by broadcaster RTE.

Unofficial tallies by party workers across the country also show record support for coalition hopefuls the Labour Party, already buoyed by exit poll figures putting it at 20.5%.

Fianna Fail, which has been in power for 14 years, is facing a wipe-out in Dublin.

Analysts claim the figures will see Finance Minister Brian Lenihan, his brother and junior minister Conor Lenihan, Tourism Minister Mary Hanafin and Children’s Minister Barry Andrews in a dogfight for survival.

Professor Michael Marsh, political scientist with Trinity College, said the exit poll could translate into Fine Gael taking 73 of the 165 seats in the Dail parliament.

He also predicted Labour would come in second on 42 with Fianna Fail pushed down to 20 and the Independents – a record number of which are standing – taking 17 seats, Sinn Fein 11 and the former coalition party the Greens two.

Campaigning Senator Shane Ross, who is one of the most high-profile Independent candidates, looks on course to top the poll in south Dublin.

The exit poll put Fianna Fail on a record low of 15.1%, with Sinn Fein’s support at 10.1%, the Greens on 2.7% and the Independents and others polling 15.5%.
