<p>Tunisia has begun three days of national mourning in memory of those who died in the protests that drove its president from power.</p>
<p>Flags were lowered and recitals of the Koran were played on state television.</p>
<p>Some 78 civilians were killed during the month-long protests over unemployment, corruption and repression, according to the interior minister.</p>
<p>A French photographer was also killed, as were some members of the security forces, and scores of people were injured.</p>
<p>President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia a week ago following the protests.</p>
<p>A caretaker government is currently in place.</p>
