Russian day of mourning following plane crash and 224 deaths

Must read

Russia is observing a day of mourning for victims of yesterday’s plane crash in Egypt – which killed 224 people.

Investigators are due to begin examining the passenger jet’s black boxes to find out why it came down.

The co-pilot’s wife has told a Russian TV channel that her husband had raised concerns about the plane’s safety.

Egypt’s prime minister Sherif Ismail has denied claims from Islamic State, that the extremist group shot down the aircraft.

“What will determine what happened is the analysis of the data in the black box and that of experts,” Ms Ismail said.

“However up until this point there are no indications that anything out of the ordinary happened on this aircraft.”

Russia’s transport minister has arrived in Cairo with a team of investigators to help Egyptian authorities determine what caused yesterday’s plane crash.

Search efforts have resumed at the crash site this morning, as more bodies are recovered.

Igor Albin is the vice-governor of St Petersburg where the flight was headed.

“147 of the victims are from St Petersburg, people of almost all the districts of our city lost residents in this catastrophy, people from 13 different regions of Russia lost their lives,” Mr Albin said.
