Antarctica record bid reaches Pole

A 10-man team attempting to achieve the fastest ever vehicle crossing of Antarctica has reached the South Pole.

The milestone for the team, who are working in partnership with Imperial College London, marks the first time that a bio-fuelled vehicle has visited the South Pole.

The Moon Regan Transantarctic Expedition left Union Glacier on November 26 to begin the journey of nearly 2,000 miles (3,219km) to McMurdo and expects to make the fastest ever vehicle crossing of the continent.

Using three vehicles, the team hope to prove their efficiency and reliability in the Antarctic terrain, allowing researchers to reduce their future environmental impact by travelling by land.

The majority of travel around the Antarctic – usually by researchers and scientists – is currently done using small aeroplanes.
