Archbishop urges help for elderly

The Archbishop of Westminster is to call for more help to be given to families caring for elderly relatives.

Speaking at London’s Westminster Cathedral, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols will ask for “special attention to be given to the sick and vulnerable”.

Referring to a damning report by the Health Service Ombudsman on the care of the elderly, he will say: “Many have been very disturbed by the recent report of shocking neglect of the elderly in some of our hospitals, while in others, of course, they receive excellent care. Many too are deeply anxious that forthcoming cuts in public expenditure are seeming to fall, too easily and too quickly, on services due to the vulnerable and elderly.”

The Mass for the Sick is an annual event held in Westminster Cathedral.
