Avalanche kills three after striking school group in French Alps

Must read

Three people have been killed after an avalanche struck a school group skiing in the Alps.

Two French high school students and a Ukrainian skier died after the avalanche in the Deux Alpes resort hit 10 students from the Saint Exupery school in Lyon and their teacher.

The avalanche happened late on Wednesday afternoon, on a closed ski run – according to Venosc mayor Pierre Balme.

Citing local police, the regional Dauphine Libere newspaper is reporting that four of the students were found in cardiac arrest and the teacher was unconscious.

An avalanche warning had already been issued in the area, French Police Commander Bertrand Host told BFM television.

French president Francois Hollande is expected to arrive in the coming hours to “support the school community and the families”.

Sixty rescue workers have been mobilised in a search-and-rescue operation with sniffer dogs and a helicopter.
