Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice has just been through its second weekend in cinemas and those box office receipts are tumbling.
Box Office Mojo reports a fall of 68.4% in revenue across the week, one of the biggest drops ever recorded. It’s difficult to see the news as a major problem though when you consider that the film has already earned over $682 million worldwide.
It’s already a blockbuster and a film that huge numbers of people have seen, and it also provides the platform Warner Bros wanted to launch the future of the Justice League series of films, as well as spin offs like Suicide Squad later in the year.
Still the tailing off is a bit worrisome, suggesting that the word of mouth for the film was enough to get people out after launch. It’s especially surprising given the lack of competition at the box office, with all other major films clearing out the way so as not to compete for box office dollars.
There’s still more room, with little to challenge the film apart from The Jungle Book and The Huntsman Winter’s War in the near future.
Batman v Superman was originally thought to be on the road to clearing more than $1 billion worldwide, making it the 25th film ever to do so, but that’s looking increasingly unlikely if this slump continues.
