An explosion has torn through a beer garden at a Nigerian army barracks where revellers had gathered to celebrate New Year’s Eve.A top air force official said it was caused by a “planted bomb”.
Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin told journalists the bomb was placed where “people are relaxing because of the new year”.
Air Chief Marshal Petirin said there was no immediate count of the injured or dead, but an Associated Press journalist saw police begin to carry bodies from the scene.
The blast occurred about in Abuja, the capital of oil-rich Nigeria.
The bomb was planted in an area of market stalls and beer parlours referred to locally as a “mammy market”.
There, civilians and soldiers regularly gather for meals and drinks.
