A British man has died at an Australian detention centre while awaiting deportation due to a breach of visa conditions.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship said the 29-year-old was not breathing when staff were called to his quarters in Sydney on Wednesday morning.
Paramedics could not revive him, the department said in a statement.
The man had been detained for breaching his visa conditions and was due to be deported. He was being held in a high-security area of the detention centre, the statement said.
Police were investigating the man’s death.
The statement man’s identity and any other details could not be released until his family is informed.
