Crews battle to contain fuel leak after train derails

Must read

Crews are working to contain a leak on an ethanol tanker that was among 16 freight train carriages that derailed in New York state, prompting the evacuation of several homes.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said the train was travelling on the Norfolk Southern line in the town of Ripley, about 60 miles south-west of Buffalo, when the accident occurred at around 11.30pm local time last night.

Emergency services officials said no one was injured and there was no fire.

But two of the derailed cars contained ethanol that leaked. One tanker has been contained and crews are working on the second.

A derailed tanker containing propane is intact.

Between 25 to 30 people have been evacuated from their homes.
Other residents near the site have been urged to remain indoors.
Ripley is located on the Pennsylvania border in western Chautauqua County, on Lake Erie.
