Damon Albarn teases details of new Gorillaz album

Must read

Albarn has confirmed he is working on a new Gorillaz record – and he says it will be fast and energetic.

He revealed he was in the “very early days” of working on the album, adding: “So far, it’s really fast, and it’s got quite a lot of energy.

“I’ve been stuck on piano, somewhere off Broadway, for years now. I want to go somewhere completely opposite of that.”

The last Gorillaz album, The Fall, came out in 2011.

Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, the Blur lead singer – who runs virtual band Gorillaz as a separate project with Jamie Hewlett – assessed the skills of his fellow pop industry icons.

He said Taylor Swift was “remarkable, but not unique,” while Drake is “not as consistent as he could be.”

Of Kanye West, he said: “I think he’s pretty unique,” while Rihanna was labelled “cool” because she was on the cover of NME.

Blur released their first studio album since 2003 earlier this year – The Magic Whip.

On playing with the band, Damon, 47, said: “I still try to avoid it like the plague, to be honest with you.”

He added: “But something weird happens once I’ve stepped on stage: I just have the best time. And then as soon as we get off, I say, ‘Never again.’ It’s very strange.

“There has to be some sort of psychological paper that explains that emotion of trying to not do something; and then doing it, and then loving it; and then as soon as you’ve done it, trying not to do it again.”
