Gag bid over shooting post-mortems

US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords shows a gunshot wound on her wrist

Federal prosecutors are hoping to stop the release of post-mortem examination results on six people killed in a gun rampage targeting US Republican Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

The request to US District Judge Larry Burns for the gag order was filed by prosecutors who say five families of victims of the attack in Tucson, Arizona, have objected to the reports being released.

The families are also seeking to prevent Pima County’s deputy chief medical examiner, Dr Eric Peters, and his staff from talking to the media about the case.

Jared Loughner is accused of shooting Ms Giffords and 18 other people in January.

The six people killed were nine-year-old Christina-Taylor Greene; federal Judge John M Roll; Ms Giffords’ aide, Gabriel Zimmerman; and bystanders Dorothy Jean Morris, Phyllis Schneck and Dorwan Stoddard.
