Helena bemoans fashion 'hijack'

Helena Bonham Carter thinks it's sad that outfits matter more than talent these days

Helena Bonham Carter has claimed that an actress’ outfits get more attention than their talent these days.

The Oscar-nominated actress and mother-of-two said the fashion aspect has “hijacked” the industry on the red carpet at the Moet British Independent Film Awards in London.

“The fashion thing has just hijacked the whole profession – it’s all about what you’re wearing,” she said.

“They couldn’t really care less about whether you act well, it’s about whether you wear the dress right.”

Helena, who is known for her kooky outfits, added she doesn’t succumb to that expectation: “I don’t do that but whatever. I just like getting dressed up and pleasing myself.”

The British-born star, who was honoured with the Richard Harris gong for her outstanding contribution to the industry, also joked that the British film industry would never perish.

“It’s always on its last legs and we’re never going to die. It’s like a cat with 10,000 lives,” she said.
