Lebanon PM seeks overseas allies

Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister is seeking international support after Hezbollah brought down his government.

Saad Hariri is to meet Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after meeting US president Barack Obama in Washington and stopped in France en route to Turkey.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah-led alliance quit the government on Wednesday, causing it to collapse. It is now making a bid to install an ally as prime minister.

If the Shiite militant group succeeds, its patrons in Iran and Syria would have far more sway in that volatile corner of the Middle East – something the US has worked to prevent.

If negotiations between Hezbollah and a Western-backed bloc fail, that could rekindle street protests and violence in Lebanon.

Lebanon’s president Michel Suleiman asked Mr Hariri to stay on as a caretaker after the government collapsed, amid disputes over a tribunal investigating the murder of former prime minister Rafik Hariri, while consultations are ongoing over a new prime minister.
